As a long-time breakfast lover, I can never decide if I prefer sweet or savory breakfasts. Most times I wake up and am craving one or the other, but sometime I want both. With these maple bacon donuts, I don’t have to choose! I made a batch of maple bacon over the weekend and decided to try making some maple bacon donuts. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like these and to my surprise, I absolutely LOVED them!

Since these maple bacon donuts are baked and not fried, they’re a breeze to make. No need to deal with heating up oil, frying donuts, and making a big old mess. If there’s one thing about me, I’m gonna pick the recipe that has less clean up.

Each donut is made with real maple syrup, packed with crispy, salty bacon bits, and topped with a sweet maple glaze. What could be better? You’re gonna want to skip the bakery donuts after you see how easy these are to make!

Ingredients You’re Going to Need

  • Bacon: I used regular bacon for this recipe, but any bacon will do! I love to cook mine in the oven for ease and less of a clean up. You can also just fry a few pieces on the stove. I like dicing the bacon into very small pieces, but you can leave bigger chunks if wanted.
  • Maple Syrup: You’ll need maple syrup for both the donuts and glaze. Make sure you use real maple syrup and not breakfast syrup. Believe me, it makes all the difference.
  • Buttermilk: Using buttermilk instead of regular milk is going to make these donuts super soft and moist. I like to make my own homemade buttermilk, it’s way easier than you think it is!

Baked Donuts Are Easy Peasy

When you hear “homemade donuts” you probably think to yourself, that can’t be easy! Well I’m here to tell you that it is when they are oven-baked. It’s truly so simple and you don’t have to worry about the mess of cleaning up used oil.

  • start by mixing the dry ingredients in a larger bowl. In a smaller bowl or measuring cup, mix all the wet ingredients.
  • Add the wet into the dry and mix (be careful not to over mix). Add in the bacon bits!
  • Pipe or spoon the batter into a greased donut pan, and bake.
  • Once they are done, allow them to cool completely before dipping them in the maple icing, and topping with more bacon.

Homemade donuts are always one of those things that after I make them, I remember how easy they are to whip up. No fancy equipment needed! If you want a delicious donut without having to make a glaze/icing, try my pumpkin spice donuts!

Oven Baked Maple Bacon Glazed Donuts

There is something to say about starting the morning with something sweet and savory- specifically sweet maple and and crispy bacon! These baked Maple Bacon Donuts bring that classic flavor you love right to your own kitchen, without the fuss of frying. Each fluffy donut is infused with maple syrup, smoky bacon pieces, and finished with a silky maple icing (and of course topped with more bacon). Perfect for a cozy weekend brunch treat, these donuts hit that perfect balance of salty, sweet, and satisfying!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 tsp (1 tsp) baking powder
  • ¼ tsp (0.25 tsp) salt
  • cup (78.86 ml) maple syrup
  • ½ cup (120 g) buttermilk , at room temperature
  • 2 tbsp (28 g) unsalted butter , melted
  • 1 (1) large egg , at room temperature
  • tsp (1.5 tsp) vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (59.15 g) bacon, finely diced (about 2-3 pieces)

Maple Glaze

  • 4 tbsp (56 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp (40 g) maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp (30 g) milk or cream
  • 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp (1 tsp) vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (59.15 g) bacon, finely diced (2-3 pieces)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350° F. Spray donut molds with nonstick spray and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp salt
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined.
⅓ cup maple syrup, ½ cup buttermilk , 2 tbsp unsalted butter , 1 large egg , 1½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Add the bacon to the batter, folding gently until mixed in.
    ¼ cup bacon
  • Scoop this mixture into a piping/ziploc bag to pipe into the donut pan. You could also just spoon the batter into the pan if you prefer.
  • Fill the donut pan 1/2 full with batter. Don't overfill the donuts because they rise while baking. If you are using silicone donut molds, place them on a baking sheet before putting them into the oven.
  • Bake for 9-12 minutes until lightly golden brown on sides. Transfer the donut pan to a wire rack and allow the donuts to cool for about 5 minutes. Carefully take the donuts out of the pan and allow them to cool before icing.

Make the icing

  • In a medium bowl, melt the butter. Add in the maple syrup, powdered sugar, and vanilla, mixing until smooth. If icing is too thick, add more maple syrup or milk. If it's too thin, add more powdered sugar.
4 tbsp unsalted butter, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Dip or drizzle donuts with glaze. Sprinkle the tops with the diced bacon. Allow the glaze to set before storing.
    ¼ cup bacon

Notes

  • These donuts are best consumed fresh, day of.
  • Store in an airtight container for 1-2 days at room temperature, or 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • You can also freeze these donuts after the icing has completely set, putting them in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Allow them to sit at room temperature to defrost.
