These baked funfetti donuts are the perfect treat- sprinkle-filled vanilla donuts dipped in a rich chocolate glaze. They're so easy to make!
Jump to:
These Funfetti Donuts are the new way to my heart! They are soft, dense, and have a cake-like texture that you will only find in a baked donut. Think like a cross between a cupcake and a muffin. The texture is perfect.
Did I mention the chocolate glaze on top is to die for? Plus putting sprinkles on anything automatically makes it 10x better (I don't make the rules, it is what it is).

Why You'll Love These Funetti Donuts
- They're baked, not fried (less mess and better for you)!
- You don't need an electric mixer, a whisk will do.
- They are topped with a rich chocolate glaze.
- Loaded with sprinkles both inside and on top.
- They are super easy to make and would be a fun activity to make with kids!
Recipe Ingredients
Here are some notes on a few ingredients- please see the full ingredient list in the recipe card below!
- milk- I used whole milk in this recipe but you can use whatever milk you enjoy.
- butter- unsalted butter is my go-to when baking in order to control the amount of salt added to the recipe. If you only have salted butter, just omit the salt that the recipe called for.
- sprinkles- obviously need these for funfetti! I got these cute sprinkles from target and I love the colors and mismatched shapes.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350° F. Spray donut molds with nonstick spray and set aside.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined. Fold in the sprinkles
Step 4: Scoop this mixture into a piping/ziploc bag to pipe into the donut pan. You could also just spoon the batter into the pan if you prefer.
Fill the donut pan ½ full with batter. Don't overfill the donuts because they rise while baking. If you are using silicone donut molds, place them on a baking sheet before putting them into the oven.
Step 5: Bake for 9-12 minutes until golden brown on top. Transfer the donut pan to a wire rack and allow the donuts to cool for about 5 minutes. Carefully take the donuts out of the pan and allow them to cool before icing.
Step 6: In a large bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, 2 tablespoon milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add up to 1 tablespoon more milk until you reach the desired consistency
Dip the cooled donuts right into the chocolate glaze and top with sprinkles immediately. If you want the icing to set, allow them to sit for 30 minutes to an hour before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you've never had or made baked donuts before, then you'd be surprised to know that the texture is not entirely like a fried donut. Baked donuts tend to have a denser, more cake-like texture to them. I like to call them a mix between a cupcake and a muffin.
The baked component of these donuts is what makes them healthier than traditional donuts, which are fried. Not only are they better for you, but the clean-up is much easier.
I have used both silicone donut molds and aluminum donut trays before. These pans are my favorite.
Tips and Tricks
- Don't overfill the donut pan- Overfilling the donut pan can cause your donuts to rise and spill out over the tops- trust me, I've done it a million times. Try to fill your donut mold ½ way or just a little more.
- Every oven is different- be sure to watch your donuts carefully in order to not overbake or undertake them. The pan you use to make your donuts will also change the amount of time needed.
- Not a fan of chocolate icing?- Make vanilla icing for these sprinkle donuts by mixing together 1 cup powdered sugar, 1-2 tablespoon milk, and ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract.
Storing & Freezing
These sprinkle donuts will stay fresh stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days and in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 1 month.
