Blueberry compote is one of the easiest ways to make any breakfast feel extra special. Made with just 4 simple ingredients, this homemade blueberry sauce is sweet, bursting with juicy blueberries, and comes together in under 30 minutes. Whether you spoon it over pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, yogurt, or a slice of warm sourdough toast, this easy blueberry compote adds fresh fruit flavor to just about everything. It’s the perfect recipe for using up fresh summer berries, but frozen blueberries work just as well, making it a delicious topping you can enjoy all year long.

My recent trip to the farmers market during peak blueberry season had me thinking of how to add more blueberries to my breakfasts. This blueberry compote recipe is the perfect way to use up any extra blueberries you have, and use it on just about any breakfast recipe you can think of. It’s one of my favorite things to make and keep in the fridge to grab and add to my toast, pancakes, and oatmeal!
This recipe uses 4 simple ingredients and is easy to make in under 30 minutes. Since you can find blueberries all year round these days, this recipe can be made anytime of the year. Don’t have fresh blueberries? No worries, using frozen blueberries guarantees that you’ll get sweet, ripe blueberries every time, even in the dead of winter.

Simple Ingredients
Only 4 simple ingredients are needed for this recipe.
- Blueberries- the star of the show- use sweet, fresh blueberries that are flavorful (taste them beforehand to check). Frozen blueberries work as well! Just add the frozen berries straight to the sauce pan- don’t defrost first. They might take a bit longer to cook down so keep an eye on them and add time as needed.
- lemon juice- I put this as optional but I highly recommend using it, it adds a punch of citrus to compliment the sweetness of the blueberries!

Easy to Make
Making compote is one of those things that seems daunting but once you try it, you realize how simple and easy it really is! This recipe is as simple as adding the ingredients to a saucepan, allowing it to simmer, and then letting it cool afterwards!
I use a wooden spoon to mash the blueberries as they simmer and soften. Some will stay whole which is fine, but I like to mash and break them up to get more of a sauce consistency.
Allow the Compote to Cool
It’s tempting to want to dive straight into this sauce with a spoon, and while no one is stopping you, I recommend allowing it to cool off the heat for at least 10 minutes. The mixture thickens up as it cools, so allowing it to sit and cool will give you a better texture to spread onto your favorite breakfast dishes.

Serving Blueberry Compote
There are so many ways to enjoy this recipe- here are a few of my favorites:
- on toast or bread- I love this on a slice of fresh sourdough!
- topping for yogurt- this plus some homemade crunchy granola would be perfect together.
- on pancakes or waffles- this on savory cornbread pancakes would be so amazing.
- oatmeal- plain oatmeal, a serving of your favorite protein oatmeal, or on any of these overnight oats!
- french toast- plain french toast slices or on a french toast casserole.
- In a drink or coffee- add this compote to a blender or use an immersion blender to get it smooth, and then add to your favorite matcha or lattes for a delicious blueberry syrup.
