This homemade Spiced Maple Syrup is one of the easiest ways to add big time flavor to your favorite breakfast recipes. Made with pure maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, and fresh orange zest, this infused syrup has a warm, cozy flavor that tastes like fall in a jar.

I originally thought making flavored maple syrup would be complicated for some reason, but boy was I wrong- it couldn’t be simpler. Just add everything to a saucepan, let it simmer for 5 minutes, and strain out the spices. The result is a richly spiced syrup that’s perfect for drizzling over super fluffy buttermilk pancakes, waffles, easy brioche French toast, and so many more dishes.

I’m already looking forward to a cozy fall morning of hosting brunch with this easy prep pumpkin french toast casserole & having this to top it with!

Grab These Ingredients

You should be able to find all of these at your local grocery store-

  • maple syrup- starting with our base, you want to use a decent quality maple syrup. I don’t recommend using regular pancake syrup!
  • orange zest- Using a few strips of orange zest really adds some amazing flavor to this syrup. Use a veggie peeler to carefully peel 2 strip off an orange, making sure to get just the top orange layer, not the white layer underneath.

Why I Use Whole Spices

Typically I like to make recipes that include ingredients that are already in my pantry. I have most of these ground spices, so I did have to hit the grocery store before making this syrup to get cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. It’s actually easier to remove the whole spices in the end and I feel like it gives the syrup a deeper flavor than using ground spices would!

Easy to Make

This recipe takes hardly any effort at all, just throw everything in a saucepan and let it simmer away!

  • start by adding the maplr syrup and all spices to a saucepan over medium heat.
  • bring this to a simmer. Once it starts to simmer, turn the heat down to low and let it gently simmer for about 5 minutes (stirring every once in awhile).
  • remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  • pour the syrup in a glass jar through a fine-mesh strainer to catch the spices & discard.

Don’t have a strainer? No worries- You can use a small colander, a cheesecloth, or even a slotted spoon. The spices stay whole so they should be easy to remove at the end.

What Can I Serve This On?

Basically any dish you enjoy with maple syrup-

  • classic breakfast & brunch dishes like pancakes, waffles, and french toast.
  • on your baked oatmeal recipes. This on my biscoff baked oats would be next level.
  • put it in your coffee or lattes for a delicious spiced maple flavor! This would would be so good in the fall.
  • would also be great on your favorite desserts, like ice cream or bread pudding!
