why you'll love this recipe
- Easy: this is the easiest breakfast. You can make it in just a few minutes and you only need a few pantry ingredients.
- Meal Prep: if you love meal prep breakfasts, then you have to try these overnight oats! These cinnamon roll oats can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days, so I love prepping a bunch of them at the beginning of the week, perfect for busy mornings.
- Hearty Breakfast: the rolled oats, chia seeds and greek yogurt will help keep you full all morning long.
ingredients
- Oats: I recommend using rolled oats or old fashioned oats. I don’t recommend using steel-cut oats. Steel cut oats won’t absorb the milk. Quick oats can be used in a pinch but they might make the overnight oats a little mushy.
- Milk: you need to add milk to overnight oats so the rolled oats can absorb the liquid. I've tested this recipe with all types of milk and any kind works!
- Chia Seeds: a serious game-changer for overnight oats! Chia seeds will soak up some of the liquid and give you a creamy texture. Don’t skip out on the chia seeds, it’s going to give you that thicker texture you want the next morning.
- Greek Yogurt: not only will greek yogurt give you creamy oats but it’ll also add some protein. I love adding plain non-fat greek yogurt, or vanilla flavored. I also use this in the "icing" that goes on top of these overnight oats.
- Brown Sugar: I’m using light brown sugar to help sweeten the oats and also give you that classic cinnamon roll flavor. You can swap for another sweetener, but I find that brown sugar (light or dark) works best for this flavor profile. Maple syrup would taste good too though!
- Cinnamon: can’t be cinnamon roll overnight oats without cinnamon! Cinnamon gives you that warm & familiar flavor in these oats.
- Powdered Sugar: mixing the powdered sugar with some extra greek yogurt will make an icing that you can drizzle on top of the overnight oats! This is gonna give you that classic cinnamon roll flavor. You could skip this and add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar to the top instead!
Additions and Substitutions
- Bump up the protein by adding a scoop of protein powder! I recommend using plain, vanilla or cinnamon protein powder.
- Oats: if you’re gluten free, make sure to use gluten-free certified oats.
- Milk: you can use regular milk or any non-dairy milk like almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, vanilla almond milk, or oat milk.
- If you’re dairy-free, you can use non-dairy milk and yogurt.
