This easy oat streusel topping is one of my favorite recipes to make to top any muffin, any crumb cake, and any fruit crisp I bake. It’s buttery, crumbly, and full of hearty oats to add flavor and texture. Adding this recipe, or my regular cinnamon streusel topping to a recipe automatically makes it a million times better.

Many of my favorite muffin recipes would be excellent candidates to receive this oat streusel topping before baking! I feel like I’m qualified to say (I’ve certainly eaten enough muffins) that a crumble topping on a muffin is the best part of the pastry!

Oats Add Flavor and Texture

I love adding old-fashioned oats to a streusel topping to add a heartier, chewier texture instead of being purely soft and crumbly. It gives it this rustic, more substantial taste to it. It also works to balance out the sugars in this recipe, so you get more of a nutty taste to your streusel.

I only tested this with rolled or old-fashioned oats, but quick oats should work fine in place of rolled oats. Be aware that they will change the texture of your crumble a bit!

5 Minutes to Make

This recipe is so easy to make, all you have to do is whisk together the dry ingredients in a bowl, and add melted butter. I typically melt my butter in the microwave, but you can do it on the stovetop as well.

Mix this together until all the dry ingredients are moistened and the mixture is crumbly. Some bigger crumbs are fine to leave! Once you’re done mixing it together, it can be used on any recipe immediately, or it can be stored and used at a later date. I currently have a batch of this in my freezer right now for the next time I need it!

Ways to Use Streusel Topping

Boy, do I have a long list of recipes this streusel topping would be so amazing on. Here are just a few!

  • any muffin recipe! Muffin batter is typically thick, so it’s perfect to withstand the crumble on top while baking!
  • crumb cake, coffee cake, buckle cakes- all kinds of cakes!
  • fruit crisps
  • banana bread or any other quick bread recipes
  • any baked oatmeal recipe
  • french toast casseroles
  • scones
