Buttery, crumbly, and incredibly easy to make, this homemade streusel topping is the perfect finishing touch for muffins, coffee cakes, crisps, and pies. It's made with simple pantry staples, comes together in under 5 minutes, and adds the best sweet crunch to any baked good. Plus no pastry cutter required!

This easy streusel topping recipe has shown up in so many of my baking recipes over the years that it finally deserved its own dedicated post! It's buttery, crumbly, perfectly sweet, and instantly makes any baked good feel a little extra special. If you've made my blueberry buckle cake or overnight french toast casserole, you already know this crumb topping is one of the best parts.
All you need is a bowl, a fork, and about 5 minutes to make this simple streusel topping. I've tested this recipe with both melted and cold butter, and while both are amazing- melted butter obviously is easier and quicker to work with! Sprinkle it over muffins, cakes, pies, quick breads, and more for the perfect buttery crunch.
Simple Ingredients

You probably have everyhting you need to make this streusel already at home!
- flour
- brown sugar
- sugar
- cinnamon- this is optional, you can definitely make this topping without the cinnamon if you're looking for more of a classic streusel flavor.
- salt
- butter- I always use unsalted butter when baking to control the amount of salt in the recipe, but if you only have salted butter that will work as well. I suggest ommitting the added salt that the recipe calls for.
5 Minutes to Make

Making streusel topping is so easy, you truly just need 5 minutes plus a bowl and a fork-
- Whisk together the dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Add the melted butter (but make sure it's had at least 10 minutes to cool down).
- Mix this up with a fork, it should start to get clumpy. Mix until its mostly pea sized clumps (but some bigger clumps are totally fine).
- I like to stick the bowl of streusel in the fridge after making it, and while I'm whipping up the batter for whatever I'm going to top it with.
- Use this on your favorite recipes!

What to Use Streusel Topping On?
There are so many recipes I use this streusel topping on! It's great on muffins, cakes, crumbles, and baked donuts.
Keep in mind that streusel does best on top of batters that are thick. If used on a thin, liquid-y batter, it could sink in and not bake well.
