French toast is one of my favorite "treat yourself" breakfasts, and my absolute favorite kind of bread is sourdough. So I decided to combine the two and make this delicious, easy sourdough french toast!
If you are a fan of sourdough bread you are going to love this recipe. You still get that tangy sourdough flavor, but it's accompanied by the sweet creaminess of the cinnamon, egg, and milk mixture. Top this french toast off with some powdered sugar, fresh berries or banana slices, and maple syrup and you are all set!
Ingredients needed for sourdough french toast
Here are some notes on a few ingredients- please see the full ingredient list in the recipe card below!
- sourdough bread- I used pre-cut bread from Trader Joe's that was pretty sliced thick. You could buy a whole loaf of sourdough and slice it yourself as well. Just be careful not to buy a pre-sliced loaf that's too thin or else it will get too soggy and break apart before cooking it!
- milk- I used whole milk while testing this recipe but you can use any milk you'd like.
- cinnamon- this adds great flavor to your french toast. Feel free to also add a touch of nutmeg or even pumpkin pie spice.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 200° F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside. Whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Pour this into a large shallow dish, like a 9x13 baking pan.
Step 2: If your sourdough toast isn't pre-sliced, slice it about ¾-1 inch thick. Make sure to not cut them too thin! Soak 2 slices of bread in the mixture for 4-5 minutes per side. While those are soaking, preheat the pan over medium heat.
Step 3: Melt a pat of butter in the pan and place the french toast in the pan, letting it cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown (start checking the bottom around 3 minutes). Flip and do the same on the other side.
Step 4: Keep the french toast sourdough warm in the oven by placing the slices on the baking sheet and keeping them in the oven until ready to serve. Serve with fresh fruit, maple syrup, and powdered sugar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Obviously, for this recipe it's sourdough! But you can totally swap out the bread for another one like brioche or challah. Basically, any thick-cut bread is great for french toast.
Make sure you cut the bread about ¾ to 1 inch thick so that when it's soaking up the egg mixture it doesn't get too soggy and fall apart. You also want to make sure you are cooking the french toast on a preheated skillet for 3-4 minutes per side, or until it's golden brown. Undercooking your french toast can make it soggy!
French toast has endless possibilities for toppings. You can top this with fresh fruit like berries or bananas, powdered sugar, maple syrup, honey, or chocolate chips. You could also serve this for dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
If you are looking for some dishes to accompany this for a gathering, I suggest something like a broccoli bacon quiche, these puff pastry breakfast cups, or for something healthier, these veggie egg white muffins. You also couldn't go wrong with just a side of scrambled eggs!
Tips and Tricks
- Use stale bread- Sourdough bread that is a few (2-4) days old works perfectly for this french toast (no worries if it's not a few days old). Be sure to check for mold before using!
- Don't skip the soak- don't skip this part! Sourdough is a hearty bread so you want to give it time to soak up all that creamy egg mixture.
- Use full dairy- If you don't have a dietary restriction, I suggest sticking with full-fat milk & heavy cream. It makes for such decadent french toast. If you have to swap for non-dairy items, it's still delicious too!
- Spice it up- add a little pumpkin pie spice to the mixture for the fall!!
- Keep it warm- If you are making a bunch of french toast at once, you can keep the slices warm in the oven as you make them. Just preheat the oven to 200° F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper, so that you can pop them in the oven as you go and serve them all together warm.
Storing & Freezing
This french toast with sourdough will stay good in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in a warm skillet or the microwave.
You can also freeze this french toast for up to 3 months. Let the toast come to room temperature and then store it in a ziploc bag in the freezer.
