What's the only thing to make waffles better? Nutella IN your waffle! This Nutella waffle recipe is so easy and adds a little extra sweetness to your Sunday brunch. These waffles are crisp on the outside but still soft on the inside. They are melt-in-your-mouth delicious and you will definitely be going back for seconds!
These waffles can be whipped up in about 5 minutes and take no time to cook. I like to add an extra drizzle of Nutella on top as well because why not!
Recipe Ingredients
Here are some notes on a few ingredients- please see the full ingredient list in the recipe card below!
- Nutella- you can use nutella or any brand hazelnut spread you enjoy! Don't love nutella? you can easily swap this for peanut butter, almond butter, or biscoff spread.
- milk- I tested this recipe using whole milk. If using thinner milk like almond, try starting with a little less than the recipe calls for so that the batter isn't too runny.
- butter- I use unsalted butter, but you can use salted if that's all you have on hand. Just omit the salt that the recipe calls for.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Make waffle batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. To this, add in the milk, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter. Mix until fully combined.
Step 2: Heat the Nutella for drizzling
In a separate microwave-safe bowl, mix together the Nutella and the oil and microwave for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, just enough to make the Nutella thinner and easy to pour.
Step 3: Make waffles
Following the directions on your waffle maker, measure the amount of batter directed into the waffle iron (my mini waffle maker uses about ¼ cup of batter). Drizzle as much Nutella on top of the batter as you want, and then take a spoon and gently swirl it into the batter. Close the waffle maker and cook as instructed (times will vary depending on what kind of waffle maker you own).
Step 4: Serve and enjoy!
Serve the waffles with an extra drizzle of Nutella, whipped cream, maple syrup, powdered sugar, strawberries, or anything else you enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! there are a few ways you can make these Nutella waffles. You can pour the batter into the waffle iron and then drizzle the Nutella on top. This is the way I prefer, and I actually take a spoon and swirl the Nutella into the batter before closing the waffle iron.
You sure can! Just follow the waffle batter directions and add the Nutella as instructed below.
I don't recommend using pancake batter because they aren't made the same- waffle batter has a bit more sugar and fat for extra crispiness! If you only have pancake batter, you can change these into Nutella pancakes!
You can heat Nutella in the microwave to get it to become more of a runny consistency, which is easier for swirling it into the waffle batter as well as drizzling extra on top!
Tips and Tricks
- Spoon and level your flour- I always recommend spooning and leveling your flour when baking. Scooping the measuring cup right into the flour will actually compact the flour and give much more than the recipe calls for. To spoon and level, use a large spoon to gently scoop the flour into your measuring cup. Once it's full, use a flat edge (like a butter knife) to gently scrape across the top of the measuring cup.
- Don't overmix the batter- Over mixing your waffle batter will cause the gluten in the flour to develop and get tougher, leaving you with chewy waffles which is not what we want!
- Use as much or as little nutella as you'd like- too much nutella isn't really a thing, is it?! You can swirl as much Nutella as you want into the batter, and top it with even more like I did because why not!
- How to keep the waffles warm- preheat your oven to 200° F and line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Keep the waffles in the oven as you cook them to keep them warm for serving.
Storing, Freezing, & Reheating
These waffles can be stored in an airtight container and will keep in the fridge for up to a week and in the freezer for 4-5 months.
You can reheat them in the microwave, a toaster oven, or if you made mini waffles you can use a regular toaster. Using a toaster oven/toaster will keep them crisper than a microwave.
