Why You Should Make this Protein French Toast

- Lots of protein- Each slice of french toast has about 7-10 grams of protein (depending on the bread and protein powder you use).
- No added sugars- There are no added sugars in this recipe, but I like to use maple syrup to top with for a little extra sweetness.

Recipe Ingredients
Here are some notes on a few ingredients- please see the full ingredient list in the recipe card below!
- high protein bread- I used Dave's Killer Bread 21 Whole Grains and Seeds. Each slice has 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, making them super filling and perfect for a healthy breakfast!
- protein powder- My absolute favorite whey protein powder is from Driven Nutrition. I used vanilla for this recipe, but you could also use chocolate or another flavor you love! If you don't like or use protein powder, feel free to skip it.
- egg/egg whites- Regular french toast recipes use whole eggs, but for the sake of protein here, we are using one whole egg and the rest egg whites!
- cinnamon- This is a staple in french toast. You could also add a small dash of nutmeg, ginger, or pumpkin pie spice as well!
- milk- I used almond milk but you can use any milk you enjoy.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Mix all ingredients except for bread together in a bowl. Heat a skillet over medium heat.
Step 2: Dip bread in egg mixture on both sides, making sure it soaks in the liquid.
Step 3: Spray the skillet with nonstick spray or butter. Add bread to skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
Step 4: Remove from skillet and top with powdered sugar and syrup before enjoying!
Frequently Asked Questions
It can be! Even if you eat "regular" french toast, that doesn't mean it's bad for you. Adding nutrient-dense foods alongside your french toast helps, such as eggs, turkey sausages, fruits (like berries), and veggies!
This one certainly does! If you use a higher protein bread plus the protein powder and egg whites in this recipe, you can definitely count this as a protein source.
I always try to find bread with a lot of protein. Dave's Killer Bread makes amazing high-protein bread that works perfectly in this recipe!
You can definitely skip the protein powder if you want, you will just have less protein per serving.
Tips and Tricks
- Whisk the egg mixture well to get rid of any protein powder/cinnamon clumps.
- Use sturdy bread so that when you dip it in the egg mixture it doesn't fall apart
- Find a protein powder that is high quality and actually tastes good. There are so many protein powders out there that are terrible and will then make your protein french toast taste terrible. This protein powder is my favorite.
Storing & Freezing
This french toast can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat, place back on a preheated skillet or microwave until warm.
Protein french toast can also be frozen after it has cooled completely and stored in a freezer-safe container. Defrost completely in the fridge before reheating.
