5-Spice Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend

If you find yourself reaching for pumpkin pie spice the second fall rolls around (or maybe even before), making your own homemade version is a simple upgrade that’s well worth it. This easy DIY pumpkin spice blend comes together in a minute using pantry staples like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. Not only is homemade pumpkin pie spice more budget-friendly than store-bought, but you can also adjust the blend to match your own taste. Once you make a batch, you’ll have the perfect fall baking spice ready whenever pumpkin season calls you.

Pumpkin spice-flavored recipes have taken over a large chunk of the calendar year here in America, with it’s flavorful nod to fall- think crisp air, falling leaves, and the seasons changing. I love this time of year, especially living in the northeast and seeing the season change real time. I will admit I do love a pumpkin flavored drink or dessert just as much as the next person!
Making your own pumpkin pie spice blend is not only incredibly easy to do, but it is also cost effective and allows you to customize the mixture to the ratios you enjoy best! Plus it can be stored for years to come, so you’ll always have some on hand.
I love using this pumpkin pie spice in everything from soft pumpkin coffee cake, to creamy pumpkin overnight oats, and even my favorite- pumpkin brioche french toast casserole.

Simple Spices Needed
All you need to make your own pumpkin pie spice are a few spices, including cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. These are all easy-to-find spices at your local grocery store. Cinnamon is the main player in this line up, with all the other spices being more “supporting characters”, which add to the depth and warmth of the spice blend. If you want, you could also add just a pinch of cardamom or black pepper to the mixture to add some extra flavor.
The best part about making your own pumpkin pie spice (aside from saving money), is that you can control the amount of spices in the batch. For example, I’m not the biggest fan of cloves, so I tend to use less or sometimes leave it out entirely of the spice blend. It’s totally up to you and what you enjoy!

Mix & Store
Making your own spice blend is as simple as whisking together the spices on hand, and using that in your recipe, or storing it for a later time! I love using these cute little spice jars to add my leftover spice to. They are easy to store and use later, plus you can use these to sprinkle the spice on your coffee easily.
Spice that is correctly stored in an airtight container can last up to 2 years, so make a big batch of this and continue to use it in all your fall recipes or pumpkin spice lattes!
Don’t Forget to Check!
Be sure to check the expiration date of your spices before you use them in your spice blend! There is nothing worse than finding out your cinnamon expired 5 years ago after you just used it to make a big batch of pumpkin pie spice.
